Grove Dairy

The first is of the shop front and my Grandmother Mrs Lillian Thompson , the date on the back of the photo ?1930.

The other picture is of my Grandfather , Henry Frank Thompson and the child is my father John Eric, who looks about 10years old, so the picture must have been taken about 1928. I was told that this car was the first in Ottershaw. They used to deliver milk with a horse and cart, and that one day my Grandfather was driving down Church Hill when a wheel whizzed passed him. It was only when he got to the bottom of the hill that he realised it was one of the wheels from the back of his own car!
My Father was born at the Dairy in 1918. His Dad delivered milk twice a day to peoples homes around the village and as far our as Lime. The milk was poured straight out of the milk churnes into the customers milk jug. [ no fridges in those days]
In 1946 my parents were married one wednesday afternoon, this being the only time that the Dairy was closed.

My Grandfather died in 1949 and the shop became just a grocers shop. My Grandmother moved over the road to Cherry Tree cottage.
When she died in in 1954 my Aunt Molly built a house in the garden. The house next door was lived in by my Uncle Herb's sister Ada Hancock.
Lillian Thompson's brother Harvey Webb and his family lived in the house that was next door to The Otter, there are flats there now.
We were told that the Dairy was very old and had once been two houses and that these were the Gates houses to Windsor Great Park..We would be very interested to know if this was true.

Behind the bar at the Castle Public House

I Have worked out from the Christmas decorations
and the calendar that these were taken in December 1955.
The view is taken from the public bar with the hatch to the
saloon bar in the background.
My Father, Maurice Edward Daws used to cut off the tail
of the small end of ties which were then pined onto the other
side of the hatch with a card identifying the "donor".

In the 1901 census my great-great grandparents, John and Mary Ann Shorter list their residence as "Cottage", Ottershaw, Surrey. He was a bailiff on a farm.
In the 1891 census, I believe they are living at "Tringham Farm". I'm not positive. My great-grandfather, Thomas R. Shorter was born at Longcross in 1876.

I'm trying to figure out where they lived exactly and if they were tenant farmers, or lived in the workhouse?

I re-checked the 1891 and 1881 census, and they are a few household's from "Peele's" of Childown Hall. In 1881, there (Shorters) dwelling is listed as Longcross, in 1891 it looks like Tringham Farm. The dwelling above them, says "Coachman's cottage" and below them on the census it says "cottage in Wood, Childown.

I am attaching a picture of whom I believe to be my great-great grandmother, Mary Ann Shorter and her two daughters.

Also, I'm not sure if I mentioned before, but I have a pewter cup to John and Mary Ann Shorter on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary from Rev. Tringham, dated 1903. Perhaps, Tringham's were important in their lives?

Thank you for your time and help.
